newborn photography session information
Welcome to the newborn photography prep packet!
Congratulations on your new baby! Thank you so much for allowing me the amazing and rewarding job of photographing your new little mini in his/her first few days of life. I consider myself truly blessed to be around these little miracles so much.
My newborn studio is located at
5619 W Crestview Trail
McCordsville, IN 46055
Before the shoot, please feed baby 2-3 hours prior, and plan on feeding him/her as soon as you get here. I can’t stress enough that it’s so important to do your best to not let babe sleep the entire morning away. Of course, we also do not want an overly tired baby so use your best judgement on this but when a little one sleeps for 4 hours before their session, odds are he will NOT be sleeping much during the session. 😉
It will be warm in the studio. Due to this, I will be dressed for a warm few hours and suggest you do too.
Most of my newborn photography sessions last between 2-3 hours, sometimes longer if baby is a light sleeper, or is hungry! The easiest way to ensure a sleepy baby is the willingness to nurse/bottlefeed off and on.
If you can, bring the soothie pacifier the hospital sent you home with. It’s the bendable, green/blue/orange one, and won’t leave marks. Even if you haven’t used one, just for the 2 hours that I’m posing him/her usually really helps. However if you really prefer that we don’t use one, that’s fine as well.
Lastly, try to put baby in clothing that zips or buttons and does not require going over his/her head. This makes it easier to undress them without making them angry.
Parents have a small sitting area in the studio room or can relax on the couch in the loft and watch TV or catch up on sleep. This is a time for you to relax and know that your baby is in good hands.
Mom & Dad – you are a big part of the show and parent shots are some of my favorite images from newborn photography sessions! Just as they encourage in the hospital, skin to skin contact creates the most beautiful images.
Dads: if you prefer not to be shirtless I ask that you bring a tighter fitting v-neck t-shirt to wear with a pair of jeans.
Moms: a comfortable tank top or t-shirt is best. Keep the color neutral and design simple. Be sure that you have no nail polish as your hands will make their way into the images. Also, rest assured, I aim to photograph using flattering angles and light to bring out the natural beauty in your family. Preference is given to tans, creams, blush colored shirts with some dainty layers or lace. Otherwise, a solid colored t-shirt or tank top is great (black, white, tan, grey, navy).
Backdrop options include a stained wood wall, a white-washed cream wall, cream seamless paper or dark grey seamless paper. You may choose what you prefer so keep that in mind when selecting clothing.
It is my hope that you come to the studio feeling comfortable and at home. I am truly honored to be able to document this incredible time in your lives and look forward to getting to know you and your sweet baby.
Please let me know ahead of time if you would like to include sibling shots. Sibling shots will take place towards the end of the session so feel free to bring items to entertain siblings while we do the newborn shoot. If you plan to have siblings photographed, I only ask that when they are not a part of the session to have them out of the room. We want to ensure a calm and peaceful environment for the star of the show so siblings are more than welcome to enjoy my loft while we shoot.
Sister(s): I provide a wrap that will act as the perfect top, or please bring along a snug fitting tank in a neutral color. I ask that girls hair be natural (or in braids) and free of bows, headbands, etc. Just as with mom, no nail polish please.
Brother(s): A snug pair of jeans and shirtless are preferred, please take a few moments to chat with your guy about this so he feels prepared for the session – though if he prefers not, a tight-fitting white t-shirt is fine.
A few additional thoughts
* My studio is in-home and we do have a dog. All areas where baby will be are dog-free and vacuumed and our dog will be put away for the duration of the session.
** Each session outcome depends on baby’s temperament during the session. Curly posed newborn positions are best when he is relaxed and calm. If baby does not relax we can discuss trying a re-shoot or we can take a more natural ‘lifestyle’ approach to the session.
If siblings will be joining you for the session I have a DVD player, books, and toys on hand. Feel free to bring a favorite movie or two to help them pass the time! It is my hope that you come to the studio feeling comfortable and at home. I am truly honored to be able to document this incredible time in your lives and look forward to getting to know you and your sweet baby.
